Cavity-less Brillouin strong coupling

A pump drives light and sound in one cold glass fibre until they split into two hybrid modes, after a single pass and with no cavity. FDT reads the anti-Stokes light and the travelling acoustic wave as the one carrier in two regimes of the same glass.

The record

What was measured

Blázquez Martínez, Zhu and Stiller send a 1550 nm pump through a highly nonlinear fibre held in a 4 K cryostat. Anti-Stokes Brillouin–Mandelstam scattering couples the light to a travelling acoustic wave at ωBr/2π = 9.5997 GHz, and the pump raises the coupling rate:

gom ≃ √(𝒢Br Υm 𝒫pump c / 4n)

Their criterion for strong coupling is a coupling above the average of the optical and mechanical linewidths, (Υopt + Υm)/2. Above it the single Lorentzian response of the anti-Stokes light splits into two peaks, and a forced-detuning technique maps the avoided crossing of the two hybrid modes. The light passes through the fibre once; no resonator holds it.

Independent arithmetic

The analysis recomputes the source’s relations from its printed inputs, propagating independent uncertainties.

Cooling leaves the gain–linewidth product unchanged within its uncertainty and lowers the threshold from 30 ± 1 to 11 ± 1 MHz. The same pump drives nearly the same coupling, and the cold fibre clears a lower bar.

The cooperativity recomputed from independent inputs is 180 ± 30, against the source’s 179 ± 2: the central values agree, and the wider error marks covariance and estimation information the paper does not print. The maximum split, 26.7 MHz, equals neither 2gom = 150 MHz nor 2gom/2π = 24 MHz, and the paper prints no relation between the split and the coupling. At 9.5997 GHz and a nominal 4 K the thermal occupation is about 8, where the source estimates the order of ten. The source places the quantum coherent coupling regime at a pump of around 5 W; the analysis’s criterion, coupling equal to thermal occupation times mechanical linewidth, gives about 2 W. The two differ as stated criteria, not as observations.

The FDT reading

I-2 One carrier, I-4 The quantum face, I-7 The mass ledger

A carrier is a disturbance of a medium at that medium’s speed, and the chain gives one medium (I-2). The anti-Stokes light and the travelling acoustic grating are that one carrier in two regimes of the same glass, and the hybrid modes are those two regime modes hybridising. Their speeds in the glass are distinct, and neither is the chain’s c. Wave number, mode occupation and thermal occupation never change a carrier’s identity.

Nothing passes between two kinds of thing. FDT has no independent force carriers: the interaction is curvature plus geodesic motion. The source’s coupled-mode algebra, the beam-splitter form of its undepleted-pump Hamiltonian, is the identity map for these spectra. On the source’s own inputs it returns the Lorentzian gain, the threshold and the coupled-mode comparisons, which is why the figure below runs on the printed numbers.

Each mode state lifts to the helical geometry of I-4: ψ is the projection of a helix onto the plane normal to the cone axis, and superposition is ignorance of the helical phase at observation. The source’s quantum coherent coupling regime, its non-classical states and its entanglement distribution read through that lift, and the correlation that entanglement distributes is a shared bivector grade.

Every step is a system-wide settlement (0.1a). The state swapping between the photon and phonon modes, and the energy that moves between the hybrid modes as the detuning is swept, are many-to-many reclosures under one global optimisation. A reverse sweep is a new preparation, never the mirror of the forward one.

Temperature enters through the complete mass ledger of I-7, where mass, stored energy, pressure and radiation each count once. The record shows the gain–linewidth product unchanged by cooling while the threshold falls, and cooling alone fixes no direction of total compactness.

The phase-matched acoustic subset that the Lorentzian gain selects reads, under P-2, as driven nodal selection: the beat of the pump and the anti-Stokes light drives the glass’s density field, and the selected mode is the nodal pattern that the drive and the clamps admit (P-3). The analysis keeps this reading exploratory and outside its count of predictions.

Coupling against the threshold. Set the pump power with the slider or by dragging across the chart, and move the fibre between the 4 K cryostat and room temperature. The curves are the source’s coupling relation on its printed gain and linewidths, with propagated uncertainty; the two circles are the source’s estimates that carry a printed pump power. The second view draws the avoided crossing of the source’s beam-splitter algebra, each branch coloured by its share of light. Its band spans plus and minus the threshold, and the branches clear it exactly when the coupling exceeds the average linewidth. Rates are the paper’s printed MHz numerals, and the drawn gap is the algebra’s 2gom, not a transcription of the measured split.

What FDT predicts

Tests the record does not yet contain

Each test compares neighbouring paths or matched preparations, so the conventional response cancels, and each adds one input the record does not contain: the handed-geometry magnetic source of P-5, or the density-response channel of I-7. The apparatus values are the analysis’s declared test points, not properties of the source’s fibre.

  1. T-1
Magnetic existence under applied twist. Rewind the same fibre on a nonmagnetic mandrel, 0.1 m in radius with 20 turns, twist it by +1 and then −1 turn per metre, and launch a 0.6 µW probe at 1550 nm in both directions with the pump off. A calibrated axial current nulls the nonreciprocal polarization rotation, and the observable is half the difference of the null currents between the two hands. The conventional comparator reads a static twist as reciprocal, so its hand contrast is zero. P-5 reads the twist as establishing a magnetic field along the fibre axis that reverses with the hand, and a contrast above the full threshold detects it. The core fixes the axis and the reversal, not a magnitude or an absolute sign.
  2. T-2
Magnetic existence in a frozen helix. Draw the same fibre design with its structure spun and frozen at +1 and −1 turn per metre, twelve draws per hand, and wind each fibre untwisted on the same mandrel. The same null-current measurement reads the frozen helix. The conventional contrast is again zero; the helical geometry of P-5 adds the source, against a design threshold of about 0.0008 A.
  3. T-3
Germanium isotope shift of the Brillouin centre. Compare fibre cores enriched in ⁷⁴Ge and ⁷⁰Ge, matched in profile and preparation, through their weak-pump line centres. The observable is Δln ωBr. The conventional comparator, with cladding-constrained volume and index response, gives about −0.002; the larger density response of I-7 gives about +0.01, a higher Brillouin frequency, against a full threshold of about 0.0009. The amplitude rests on density sensitivities established independently, and their product fixes the sign.
  4. T-4
Oxygen isotope shift of the gain–linewidth product. Enrich the whole glass, core and cladding, in ¹⁸O against ¹⁶O and measure the product of peak gain and full width in weak-pump Lorentzian fits. The conventional contrast is about −0.03 and the FDT contrast about +0.2, against a full threshold of about 0.009.
  5. T-5
Germanium isotope shift of the gain–linewidth product. In the same ⁷⁴Ge and ⁷⁰Ge cores, the gain–linewidth product shifts by about +0.01 in FDT against a conventional −0.002, with a full threshold of about 0.009. It is a separate observable from the frequency of T-3, with its own area, photoelastic and covariance channels.

Standard reading

Light and sound are two systems, and their interaction is mediated by force carriers.

FDT reading

Photon and phonon are one spin-1 excitation in two density and geometry regimes. There are no independent force carriers, and the interaction is curvature plus geodesic motion (I-2).

c is the speed of light in vacuum.

c² is a response property of the omnium, and there is no empty background (0.1).

Annihilation operators act on probability amplitudes, and observation collapses them.

Each mode state is the projection of a helical geodesic on a truncated density cone, and superposition is ignorance of the helical phase (I-4).

Strong coupling swaps states coherently between a photon and a phonon, and a detuning sweep runs an adiabatic transition that the reverse sweep mirrors.

Each exchange is a many-to-many reclosure under one global optimisation, and forward and backward responses are never particle-by-particle mirror events (0.1a).

Convergence

Use 2 Same source, same data

Set the isotope sensitivity to its conventional value and remove the handed-geometry magnetic source. Keep the source’s gain, linewidths, pump settings, phase matching and undepleted-pump coupled-mode dictionary. The Lorentzian gain, the threshold, the spectral estimates and the simulated comparisons then return on exactly those inputs: the couplings 8 ± 3, 61 ± 2, 75 ± 2, 76 ± 2, 68 ± 2 and 4 ± 3 MHz, the cooperativity 179 ± 2, the occupation of the order of ten, and the pump of around 5 W at which the source places the quantum coherent coupling regime. The unchanged Einstein equation supplies the I-3 containment for the same stress data.

FDT departs from this record only through the two added inputs, P-5’s handed-geometry magnetic source and I-7’s density-response channel, and each departure is a test above.
